I walk in silence through a maze
of barren trees stretching skyward.
A first glance suggests empty limbs, but upon further inspection
I spy pairs of eyes peering out at me
while becoming frozen in place...as if their stillness creates invisibility.
I play a game of peek-a-boo with a sparrow
as a curious squirrel watches from a neighboring tree.
I hear a gentle rustling in a tree still partially clothed and discover yet another
camouflaged treasure resting,
as a red-bellied woodpecker returns home...
a starling perches on the remainder of a once healthy branch
and a mockingbird seemingly frets over the loss of sooooo many delicious berries.
A yellow-rumped Warbler flits from limb to limb
while a Kingfisher waits patiently for a morning snack.
And so it is with life...don't discount the beauty and hidden treasures in each day...
they're there...and they're well worth listening and looking for.
